The good news is that there are several types of detoxes (or cleanses) that help rid the body of the junk we sometimes consume. By bringing the body back to a more natural state, cleanses can be a great way to train your mind to get you used to a new routine.
Cleanses vary in severity and length of time, so you can choose one that best fits your needs. Try kicking it off your new habit change with these ideas:
- A Juice Fast can be a great, natural way to begin the cleanse of your body, as it’s based on only consuming healthy fruits and veggies, usually in liquid form.
For juicing on a regular basis, you will need your own juicer and a constant supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. Local farmer’s markets are a great place to obtain cheap produce and help your local community at the same time.
If you aren’t up for a longer challenge (and it really is just that), start small by juicing for an entire day or just replacing one meal with a fresh fruits and veggie based juice. You can mix any combination you like.
It is a good idea to replace with a fresh, healthy juice any time your body is craving alcohol or processed foods.

It is recommended that when juicing, you do it for 3, 5, or 7 days straight while not consuming anything else. At first, juicing may make you feel sluggish, dizzy or nauseous, but once your body is rid of the toxins, you’ll be on top of the world!
- Semi-Vegetarian Cleanses can also help remove poisonous microorganisms from your system. You’ll mostly be consuming vegetables on this cleanse, but are allowed a light, healthy meal once per day.
The small meal you will be eating should include 1 piece of lean meat, 1/2c.-1c. of brown rice or brown rice pasta and of course, more vegetables. The portions may sound small, but your body actually stays quite full because of the high amount of fibre consumed in the veggies you’re eating.
It is also recommended to add a probiotic –which will help clean out your system even further and help aid in digestion. The rest of the day you will only be consuming fruits and vegetables. A general rule of thumb to follow is 2 vegetables servings for every 1 fruit eaten.
Some ideas on fruits and vegetables to eat:
○ bell peppers
○ carrot sticks
○ sweet potatoes
No sauces should be used while doing this cleanse because most contain tons of calories, sugar and fat. Stay away from salad dressing, hot or teriyaki type sauces. Fresh lemon juice and olive or other healthy oils are suggested, along with sea salt and black pepper or chili pepper flakes so food isn’t too bland.
You may also consider adding a fresh fruit and vegetable juice to add a little more excitement to this diet. It can be done as little at 3 days or as long as a week depending on your needs and how long you decide you can last eating like this.
After cleansing, your body will be rid of harmful toxins that were taken in because of poor diet and/or alcohol consumption. When toxins are no longer present, cravings for unhealthy things like alcohol and fast food are greatly diminished. Once the cravings are gone, it will be much easier to stay away from alcoholic beverages.
