Charlene is one of those people that have touched my life without me even meeting her. She reads my blog and for that she deserves my full attention. One day she left a comment on one of my blog posts to read her book and to give my opinion. Well, here it is. When I purchased Fried Blue Potatoes I didn’t know what to expect. The story was a mystery to me. I loved the title as it reminded me of a movie that I don’t ever think I saw – or even existed. Maybe it’s just a great title of a movie yet to see the light of day? I also loved the named Charlene. Even when I say it now it rolls off my tongue in by very best American drawl.
The book is a tale of Char’s life, published at the ripe young age of 80. That was my first shock. My experience of 80-year old people is wrinkles and grey, and yet Char always came across as a youthful, exuberant and colourful teenager. She had made me smile in the first line, which is always a good start. She was the youngest of five children and carried the tag of the ‘Depression Baby.”
“It was the way it was.” Says Char matter-of-factly.
The book covers the tale of her family, her upbringing, her 63-year marriage to Gene and some marvellous little tales that she had written for ‘Inspire Me Today.’ As her quill trails across the page, the lines and squiggles pull you into the paper. She makes you smile, pause and smile some more. As you would expect from an 80-year old woman she imparts some wonderful pearls of wisdom. I particularly like this piece from the book: –
I said, “Vickey, she sure knows how to push our buttons!” After being silent for a moment, Vickey said something pretty profound. She said, “You know – if we didn’t have any buttons – she couldn’t push them.”
I am so very glad that Char shared her life with the world. My only gripe is she stopped too short. There is more to tell, of that I am sure, and I was left a little wanting after devouring the pages in a few short days. It is a tale, that if extended, could easily be seen on the silver screen. I think I will choose Meryl Streep to play the role of Char.
Yes…that will do nicely.
