Something tells me that Eckhart Tolle is going to be the next person to have a profound effect on my life. A New Earth is the second book that I have read from the mind of Tolle, after reading The Power of Now back in March of last year, and right now I would want nothing more than for this man to teach me everything that he knows.
But I do have a problem. I am not sure my mind is ready for him quite yet. I found The Power of Now an incredibly complex book, and although The New Earth was slightly more palatable I lost my grip on his hand far too many times for my liking.
Sometimes you are just not ready for a book. Maybe I’m not yet ready for Tolle, but I’m not going to give up trying. I sense something here. I believe this man can help me find what I am looking for.
So what exactly am I looking for?
I am been stuck between two worlds ever since I stopped drinking over four years ago. I find it difficult to relate to the people that I spend the most time with and I am finding that I tend to live a rather lonely life. It’s a choice I am making and a situation that I am acutely aware of, but one that I desperately want to change.
I am alive when I am around people, but they have to be the right people. I have not found those people yet, because I haven’t quite found myself yet. I am in the midst of a huge change in my life and it’s a change that has been spanning four years.
Chapter One of this book is called ‘The Flowering of Human Consciousness,’ and that is what I think is happening to me. I am learning more and more about how to minimise the damage my ego causes both me and those that surround me, I am learning to reduce my stress and worry of the past and future by setting reminders to remain in the now, I can see a lot of the illusions of life in much the same way as Neo did in the movie The Matrix; but my eyes remain sticky and refuse to open the whole way.
“If there is unhappiness in you, first you need to acknowledge that it is there. But don’t say, “I’m unhappy.” Unhappiness has nothing to do with who you are. Say, ‘There is unhappiness in me.” Then investigate it. A situation you find yourself in may have something to do with it?” – Eckhart Tolle
Who should pick up this book?
If you believe you are starting to see the world in a different way, or are going through periods of change, unhappiness, loneliness or suffering. If you identify with your ego, battle with the voice inside of your head and always seems to lap up pain and sorrow like a kitten taking milk. If any of this is familiar to you then read this book.
‘Alienation means you don’t feel at ease in any situation, any place, or with any person, not even with yourself.” – Eckhart Tolle.
When I read work by Tolle I instantly think of Jesus Christ. A man ahead of his time trying to explain things to people who just don’t seem to be able to grasp everything he is saying. Sometimes I think he is speaking in riddles. I am hoping that one day they will unravel themselves to me so I can then learn from them and teach them to others who need help just like me.
